Claude is Anthropic's AI chat assistant, available as a free tier and a paid Pro plan. Cancelling means turning off auto-renewal of the paid plan; the trap is the short fuse - you must cancel at least 24 hours before renewal, or the charge lands. A second trap is refunds: by default there are none, except where law says otherwise.

Refunds are not offered by default; the notable exception is for users in the EEA and UK, who have a 14-day right of withdrawal under applicable consumer law - a statutory entitlement, not discretionary courtesy. Elsewhere, refunds are handled case by case through support. The 24-hour cancellation deadline leaves little slack, so act early.

To cancel, open claude.ai/settings/billing, go to Settings > Billing, select Cancel subscription, and confirm. The process is self-serve and needs no phone call. After cancellation the account reverts to Free and your conversations are retained. You can resubscribe anytime.

Practical advice: cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to be safe - do not cut it close. If you are in the EEA or UK, you have a 14-day right of withdrawal you can exercise rather than relying on goodwill; if you are elsewhere, expect no automatic refund and raise it with support if your case fits. Your chat history stays with the Free tier, so leaving costs you no data, only the paid features.
