Quick Answer
How to cancel a free trial before it ends depends on who bills it — Apple, Google Play, PayPal, or the service. Cancel in that company's own settings, not in the app you're trialling, at least 24 hours before the trial ends, and screenshot the confirmation. Deleting the app cancels nothing.
Why free trials turn into charges
A free trial isn't a free product. It's a deferred payment with a card already attached.
We scored all 203 services in our directory on six friction axes — how hard the cancel entry point is to find, how many steps it takes, whether refund terms are visible, how many confirmation screens block you, whether support must be contacted, and whether a phone call is required. The headline result: 95.6% of services (194 out of 203) turn auto-renewal on by default, and 80.8% hide their refund terms. The method is published in the 2026 Subscription Friction Index, where 95.6% of services auto-renew by default is documented axis by axis.
That default is the business model. The trial isn't built to expire quietly — it's built to convert. Nobody at these companies is betting you'll remember day 14.
The three dates that matter
Every trial has three dates, and you're usually shown only one:
- Signup date — when you entered card details. The clock starts here, even if you never open the product.
- Conversion date — when the trial ends and the charge fires, often at midnight in the merchant's timezone rather than yours.
- Cancel-by deadline — your real deadline, which is earlier. Apple tells users to cancel a trial at least 24 hours before it ends; many direct-billed services authorise the card before the expiry timestamp you see.
Work backwards. Conversion on the 20th means cancel by the 18th, reminder on the 17th.
Already lost track of what you're paying for? That's a different job: audit first, cancel second. Start with how to find hidden subscriptions charging your card, then come back for the mechanics.
First: find out who actually bills the trial
Almost everyone skips this step, and it's why "I cancelled and still got charged" is so common. The app you're trialling and the company charging your card are often different businesses. Cancel in the wrong place and the subscription keeps running.
| Where you started the trial | Who charges you | Where you must cancel | The usual mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| In an iPhone/iPad app, confirmed with Face ID or your Apple ID password | Apple | iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions | Hunting for a cancel button on the service's own website |
| In an Android app, confirmed through the Play checkout sheet | Google Play | Play Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions | Uninstalling the app and assuming it ended |
| Checkout offered PayPal and you logged into PayPal | PayPal | PayPal → Settings → Payments → Automatic payments | Killing the payment but never ending the subscription |
| You typed your card into the service's own website | The service | That service's account / billing settings | Expecting one click; 29.6% of the 203 services we score hide the cancel entry point, and 18.2% add retention screens |
| Trial bundled into something else (mobile plan, Amazon, a bank perk) | The bundler | The bundler's membership area | Cancelling inside the service, which shows no subscription |
Two things cancel nothing: deleting the app and removing your card. Deleting an app removes an icon. Removing a payment method just pushes the account into a "past due" state the service keeps retrying.
How do I cancel a free trial before it charges me?
Cancel through whichever company bills you, before the cancel-by deadline, and keep proof. Four paths cover every consumer trial.
Apple-billed trials (iPhone and iPad)
- Open Settings, tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions. If it's missing, you're signed into a different Apple ID — the trial was bought on another one.
- Select the service, then tap Cancel Subscription (or Cancel Free Trial while the trial is live).
- Confirm. Screenshot the screen showing the expiry date.
Timing is the trap. Apple instructs users to cancel at least 24 hours before a trial ends, and the charge is often authorised before the expiry timestamp you see. If Apple bills the trial, the service's website can't help — there's no billing record there. That's the case for How to cancel the Apple Music free trial, and for Trello or Paramount+ subscribed on iOS.
One nuance: Apple-billed trials can end access sooner. Trust the expiry date on the confirmation screen, not the marketing page.
Google Play trials
- Open the Play Store app.
- Tap your profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
- Select the service → Cancel subscription → follow the prompts.
- Screenshot the confirmation.
Uninstalling cancels nothing — Google says so in its own documentation, and it's still the most common false sense of security. Proton VPN shows why the route matters: see How to cancel the Proton VPN free trial for the Play-billed path versus direct.
PayPal automatic payments
- Log in → Settings (gear icon) → Payments.
- Select Manage automatic payments.
- Choose the merchant → Cancel.
- Save the confirmation email.
Here's the part people get wrong: cancelling the automatic payment cuts off the money, not the subscription. The service still thinks you're a customer, so you can land in a failed-payment state and lose access immediately. Do both.
Billed directly by the service
- Sign in on the web — cancel links are frequently hidden in mobile apps.
- Go to Account → Billing / Plan / Subscription.
- Find Cancel plan or Do not renew. If it's absent, search the help centre for "cancel": 29.6% of the 203 services we scored make the entry point deliberately hard to find.
- Walk through every screen. Retention offers and "pause instead" buttons are built to look like the final step.
- Save the confirmation number, then check your email for the receipt.
If there's no self-serve option, send written notice before the deadline and keep a dated copy — a cancellation letter template makes that five minutes of work and creates the paper trail you'd need later.
Stuck on a trial that hides its cancel button? Our Cancellation Packs include the exact wording, escalation path, and refund-request language for the services that make leaving hardest — one-off, no subscription.
Will you keep access if you cancel early?
Usually yes. Cancelling stops the next charge; it doesn't revoke the days you were given. But "usually" isn't "always", and the difference often comes down to who bills the trial.
Say you start a 14-day trial on the 3rd to finish a deck due on the 15th. Cancel on the 12th and the files don't vanish — the editor drops to its free tier on the 17th, two days after you deliver.
Here's what our directory records for the trials people search for most. "Friction" is the 0–10 Cancellation Friction Score; lower is easier to leave.
| Service | Friction | Where it's billed | What happens when you cancel |
|---|---|---|---|
| How to cancel the Trello free trial | 3.0 | Direct / App Store / Google Play | Boards stay accessible; paid features drop to Free at period end |
| How to cancel the Figma free trial | 4.3 | Direct | Files remain; editor reverts to Free restrictions |
| How to cancel the Slack free trial | 4.3 | Direct | Workspace goes read-only / Free; messages retained |
| How to cancel the Notion free trial | 4.3 | Direct | Workspace stays on Free; content intact |
| How to cancel the Paramount+ free trial | 4.3 | Direct / App Store / Google Play | Access continues until the period ends |
| How to cancel the Crunchyroll free trial | 4.0 | Direct | Premium perks last until the membership expires |
| How to cancel the Tidal free trial | 3.0 | Direct | Cancellation takes effect the day after the period ends |
| Apple Music (friction 3.9): cancel in Apple ID settings | 3.9 | Direct / App Store | Access continues to period end, then reverts to free tier |
| How to cancel the Prime Video free trial | 4.5 | Direct | Prime benefits remain until the period ends |
| Proton VPN (friction 4.5): Play vs direct paths | 4.5 | Direct / Google Play | Reverts to Free; data retained |
| How to cancel the Cursor free trial | 4.4 | Direct | Reverts to Free (Hobby); projects kept locally |
The pattern: in our directory, the direct-billed trials above run to the end of the window; app-store trials are less predictable. If you need every last day, that matters more than the friction score.
One deliberate dividing line. This page answers where and how to cancel. If your real question is which day saves you a month without losing a week of access, read when to cancel a subscription (and which day saves you a month). Timing and mechanics are separate problems.
The hardest trials and money-back guarantees to cancel (Friction Score)
Most consumer trials are easy to leave. A specific set are not, and those are exactly the ones that turn "free" into a year of charges. Ranked by Friction Score, these are the twelve worst exits among the 203 services we track — note that not every entry is a true free trial, so check which one you actually signed up for.
| Service | Friction | Trial type | Worst axis | Billed via | Cancel path |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| How to cancel Wrike (friction 7.0) | 7.0 | Free trial | Find entry (9.4) | Direct | Email support |
| How to cancel Netflix (friction 6.2) | 6.2 | Trial (region-dependent) | Find entry (8.0) | Direct | Web |
| How to cancel HubSpot (friction 6.0) | 6.0 | Free trial | Refund terms hidden (9.5) | Direct | Web (account settings) |
| How to cancel Datadog (friction 6.0) | 6.0 | Free trial | Refund terms hidden (9.5) | Direct | Web (account settings) |
| How to cancel Adobe Creative Cloud (friction 5.2) | 5.2 | Free trial | Find entry (7.0) | Direct | Web |
| How to cancel Salesforce (friction 5.2) | 5.2 | Free trial | Steps (7.0) | Direct | Web |
| How to cancel Xero (friction 5.0) | 5.0 | Free trial | Refund terms hidden (9.5) | Direct / App Store / Play | Web (account settings) |
| How to cancel Semrush (friction 5.0) | 5.0 | Free trial | Refund terms hidden (9.5) | Direct | Web (account settings) |
| How to cancel SiriusXM (friction 5.0) | 5.0 | Free trial | Refund terms hidden (9.5) | Direct / App Store / Play | Web (account settings) |
| How to cancel Hulu (friction 4.9) | 4.9 | Trial (region-dependent) | Confirm screens (8.0) | Direct / App Store / Play | Web |
| How to cancel NordVPN (friction 4.8) | 4.8 | Money-back guarantee | Find entry (7.0) | Direct | Web |
| How to cancel Microsoft 365 (friction 4.7) | 4.7 | Free trial | Steps (7.0) | Direct | Web |
Trial availability also varies by region, so confirm the terms on the service's own page.
Two distinct failure modes here. Find-entry friction (Wrike, Netflix, NordVPN) means twenty minutes hunting for a link. Confirm-screen friction (Hulu at 8.0) means you find the button instantly, then get pushed through discount offers and pause-instead screens. The second type is more effective at stopping you, because the first retention screen reads like the end of the process.
Wrike is the extreme case: 7.0 overall, 9.4 on find-entry, 9.1 on contact-support. There's no clean self-serve cancel — you email support and wait, which is how a trial becomes a charge mid-thread.

If the trial already charged you
Two separate transactions are in play: cancelling stops future charges, refunding reverses one that already happened. Doing the first doesn't do the second. Cancel anyway — it caps the damage at one cycle.
Then chase the refund through whoever took the money:
- Apple-billed: use Apple's refund flow at reportaproblem.apple.com and state plainly that the trial converted before you intended.
- Google Play: request a refund in Play order history, or contact the developer directly for a faster outcome.
- PayPal or card: open a dispute. "The merchant advertised cancel-anytime and made cancelling unreasonably hard" beats "I forgot."
- Direct: ask support for a one-time courtesy refund within 24–48 hours. After that window, merchants are far more likely to point at the terms you agreed to.
Here's the pattern to avoid: you start a trial, decide against it on day 12, and delete the app. The charge lands on day 15; you cancel on day 22 and ask for a refund. You get the cancellation, not the money — from the merchant's side you've used nine days of a paid month. The 24-hour buffer matters more than the refund request.
A trial reminder system that actually works
The reminder is the whole system. Everything else is admin.
- Record four things at signup: service name, conversion date, who bills it, cancel-by date (conversion minus 48 hours, minus 24 for Apple). Thirty seconds of typing saves an hour of arguing later.
- Set two alarms: conversion minus three days (decide), conversion minus 24 hours (act).
- Keep the confirmation. Screenshot the cancel screen and keep the email. To reconstruct what you signed up for, Gmail search operators to find trial receipts covers the exact queries — the fastest audit involving no third-party tool.
- Audit quarterly. C+R Research found 42% of consumers pay for at least one forgotten subscription. Fifteen minutes with your card statement every three months catches the trials that slip through.
Why we can say this without touching your data: Unsubscribetool is a static directory of 203 verified cancellation guides. No account, no mailbox connection, no inbox access — we never see your email. You look up the service, read the verified steps, and cancel it yourself.
Your rights when a trial auto-renews
You have more leverage than the process suggests, and it varies by where you live.
- US federal: the FTC's Negative Option Rule — the vehicle for the "Click-to-Cancel" amendments — was vacated by the Eighth Circuit on July 8, 2025, so no federal one-click mandate is in force. ROSCA still applies — read your cancellation rights under ROSCA before escalating.
- US state level: California, New York, Illinois and others require disclosure before the charge and a straightforward cancel path. See auto-renewal laws by state.
- European Union: the Consumer Rights Directive (Directive 2011/83/EU) gives a 14-day withdrawal right for most online contracts, and the Omnibus Directive requires cancelling to be as easy as signing up. See the EU 14-day cooling-off right guide.
- Everywhere: if cancelling is materially harder than signing up, say so in writing and quote that asymmetry. Regulators read that sentence.
FAQ
How far in advance should I cancel a free trial before renewal? Aim for 48 hours. Apple advises at least 24 hours before a trial ends, and many direct-billed services authorise the card a day early, so the day-before window is riskier than it looks.
Does deleting the app cancel my free trial? No. Uninstalling removes the app and leaves the subscription running — Google states this explicitly. Cancel in Settings or Play, then delete the app.
If I cancel a free trial early, do I lose access immediately? Usually you keep access until the window ends. App-store trials are less predictable and can stop sooner, so read the expiry date on the confirmation screen.
How do I stop a free trial from charging me on iPhone? Settings → your name → Subscriptions → select the service → Cancel Subscription, at least 24 hours before the trial ends. The service's website won't work, because Apple holds the billing relationship.
Do I need to cancel both the PayPal payment and the subscription? Yes. The PayPal automatic payment stops the money; only cancelling inside the service ends the subscription. Skip the second step and you inherit a past-due account and collection emails.
I was already charged. Can I still get a refund? Often, if you move fast. Request it within 24–48 hours through Apple, Google Play, or the merchant, and cancel at the same time. Failing that, a card dispute citing the cancellation difficulty is next.
Why was I charged when the trial was supposed to be free? Because the trial ended and auto-renewal fired. Of the 203 services we score, 95.6% default auto-renewal to on, so the charge is the intended outcome, not a glitch — it feels like a surprise only because the conversion date was never surfaced clearly.
The short version: find out who bills the trial, cancel in that company's settings 24–48 hours before the conversion date, and screenshot the confirmation. That's the entire game. When a service makes those steps unreasonably hard, its Friction Score tells you exactly which wall you're hitting — and our Cancellation Packs give you the wording to get past it.
